At Yesteryear Furniture our mission is to manufacture reproductions of antique furniture designs. We read many articles and books to search for designs that we feel would be useful in today's homes but still maintain the look of an antique. We try to employ as many joints and methods, that were used by early American furniture craftsmen. We feel that these are the best methods to incorporate into the assembly of fine furniture, even though these can be very time consuming. Some of these include, Dovetail joints, Tonque and groove, Mortise and tenon, Rabbet joints, Dove & Dado joints, Lap joints. Mostly we use these for stability, but some add interest to a piece. All of our drawers would be assembled using Dove tail joints. We Rabbet all backs and groove the drawer bottoms. All of our doors are built in house and use Mortise and tenon grooves. All knobs are hand turned and latches are wooden. We prefer to build most of our pieces using American Wormy Chestnut. We feel by using this wood the item becomes a collection piece. The availability of Chestnut is dwindling and at this time there is no renewable source for this ( see our Chestnut history page). Although most of our stock pieces are Chestnut, we will build using a wood of your choice as long as it is locally available. We also pride ourselves in the ability to color match finishes, and can match a piece to a color if a sample is provided.
